TRIPPIN' ON "ACID TRIP"
Certainly Biker Magazine readers can enjoy the theme behind this 60 Panhead, and of course, there is no implication that anyone among us ever experimented with LSD or blotter acid in the 60’s...yea, right!
When I first laid eyes on the machine, the energy and quality that went into the amazing paint job deserved most of the attention. However, the more study and time I had photographing the bike, the more I understood how much thought and talent Jeff put into “Acid Trip”.
Paisano Publications has now made a bit of a habit at discovering Jeff Gray/Jaag Cycles builds. His stuff always seems to bring those very fine lines and superb finishing touches into first class projects.
This 60’s Pan motor evolved into “Acid Trip” beginning with the paint. Jeff’s paint idea came first and in his words, “I wanted to build a bike from back in the day that everything was simple and different, a cool ass road worthy Pan that brings back the days of riding hard and partying in style. I wanted an old school paint job that was outstanding for its day. It was important to have all the colors lay down in geometric forms; no one is doing that today. In the 60’s street rods were everywhere with this paint. Easter egg colors in all shapes and sizes mixed and twisted, curved, long, short, and expanded...hence, the “Acid Trip.”
Other very fun facts related to Acid Trip include the original 60 Panhead motor that has been a member of Jeff's family for all those years. Yes, Gray guarantees the motor has also experienced numerous acid trips throughout its day. A tribute of sorts to the introduction of the era. The history of the 60’s shall live in my mind as the changing of the guard in our fight for freedom throughout this land.
Jeff split the Pan cases, stripped the tranny and handed all the parts to “Ed’s Polishing” who transformed the stock aluminum into a mirror finish. With the exception of changing heads to S & D, all the interior of the motor is stock HD from 1960. Jeff comments about the rebuild of the motor, “that nothing was fast about an acid trip”...errrrrr., so he’s been told.
Trippin’ on the metal work, Jeff did all the work in house grinding and cutting away to make the sissy bar, pipes, frame, fenders, tank and mounts, motor mounts/coil mounts, battery box. When it comes to bumping, grinding and welding, Jeff has special help from “Elite Metals” and Richard. Great work here also.
Throw into the mix of handmade stuff the original 45 Springer front end and original 1960 forward controls with chopper pegs. Nothing fancy, just cool and we have a most admirable complete 1960 trip of acid very much pleasing to those of us who experience through our eyes and ears Hendrix & Joplin and Morrison an what the fuck, even Mama Cass.
One item left...the seat, all hand stitched by another guy John Longo. John is legendary as he handmade Big Daddy Roth’s seats and Rod interiors for years including the last bike Roth built before he died.
John suggested that he, Jeff and crew live the day and scene with seven Hits of acid, Jimmy
Hendrix on the turntable, incense burning, strobe lights flashing through black lights, go-go babes with white t-shirts, nipples glowing the black lights...fucking perfect, seven days later they all woke up and Holy Shit!!! The seat was done.
To this day no one remembers how or anything after the seat job. Best damn seat production I’ve ever heard of.
Be careful out there will ya and ride! Damn it.
